The supremely underrated Teresa Wright (Hitchcock didn’t force her to be a blonde) and similarly under-the-radar Macdonald Carey were so great together in Shadow of a Doubt, they were put together in another film: Count the Hours, directed by Don Siegel.
Thornton Wilder was brought in at the beginning of Shadow of a Doubt to write about the dark side of small town life – a killer can hide in plain sight in the inwardness of the family. Wilder had to exit the production to serve in World War II.
I snapped this in December of 2023. Nice to get this view while the lot was vacant next door. When the house was chosen for its exterior by the Shadow of a Doubt production, it was selected in part for its un-showy appearance. Hitchcock was disappointed that the owners threw a fresh coat of paint on it before production.
